enrichment
and experience
It’s all about community and social capital.
Every Scholar participates in a variety of experiences which can include visits to colleges, career visits/shadowing, community service opportunities, leadership courses, cooking classes, visual and performing arts shows, and more.
College tour experiences
GenOne believes that students must see it to believe it. Every year, GenOne completes nearly a dozen college tour experiences where Scholars don’t just hear from admissions officers, but they get a tailored experience geared towards first generation college students, often co-led by students with similar backgrounds.
Career experiences and connections
Research shows that when students are motivated by career goals, that they are more likely to graduate from postsecondary education. This is why a key component of GenOne’s program is to expose students to various companies, non-profits, and government agencies in order to broaden their horizons. GenOne Advisors and their College and Career curriculum also supports Scholars to discover their interests, learn their strengths, and then connects them to real-world opportunities throughout high school and college.
Social capital development and networking
GenOne mentors and prepares Scholars to create a network of people who can connect them to current and future opportunities. GenOne provides both training and opportunities for Scholars to develop their network through their after school programs, college and career tour experiences, and internship connections.
GenOne connects dozens of Scholars annually to various summer opportunities that boosts their resume for college applications and supports them to explore career interests.
If you have a connection with a Charlotte-area organization that would be willing to host one of our experiences, please reach out to partner!
Credit Karma offered paid summer internships to a select group of GenOne Scholars in a variety of departments.
